Instead of finding paradise, however, they discover only totalitarian oppression and political murder. One by one, her family is killed for trumped-up charges as a part of Stalin's purges. Ernst Stein (Rolf Ludwig) used to be a classical actor in the East German stage, but he was so disgusted by the use of his country's soldiers to help put down the 1968 freedom movement in Czechoslovakia that he walked off the stage in the middle of a performance of King Lear. Since then, he has been living in seclusion in his country house, surrounded by young admirers. Nothing, it seems, will deter him from living as he pleases now, certainly not the tanks that rumble past his door; mere soldiers attempting to break into his home present almost no challenge to him. He continues entertaining his young friends with impromptu performances in the grand style, and they engage in lively banter in a difficult to understand Berlin dialect. Like this film's leading character, director Egon Gunther walked away from his career in disgust, and emigrated to West Germany and freedom. The reunification of Germany allowed him to work with old colleagues for the first time in ten years, and this film was received with great appreciation when it was shown at the 1991 Munich Film Festival.

During the fervently nationalist months leading up to World War II, a rebellious teenager is transferred to a new primary school in a small Inland Sea town. He vies with the school’s reigning bully, who takes a romantic interest in his older stepsister. When they learn she’s going to be sold to a brothel to pay off her father’s debts, they form an uneasy alliance to free her. With surprising moments of caricature and slapstick, Obayashi celebrates the anarchic world of adolescence while also satirizing adult hypocrisy and conformism.

Shoko Kimura’s Koi ni Itaru Yamai begins well enough with beyond precocious high schooler Tsubara (Miwako Wagatsuma) seducing her nerdy teacher Madoka (Youichiro Saitou). Through their impetuous coupling on a pile of exam papers, somehow their sex organs get transposed. It’s at this very moment where the film not only begins to fall apart, but where director Kimura begins to show her retrograde attitudes and views about male/female sexuality and roles. The confused couple goes to a cabin retreat to figure out things. Tsubara’s goofy-fascinated by her new rod, while Madoka retches every time the idea of fucking comes up. Somewhere along the line, justified by some idea of counterpoint, another young high school couple En (Aimi Satsukawa) and Maru (Shouta Sometani) join up to cavort and work out their own issues of sexuality. Most noticeably absent from the meandering speaking that poses as dialogue is the issue of a teacher and teenage student getting it on. Zero. Despite a good initial inspiration, Kimura remains pretty fucked up on issues regarding sex and gender.Director: Shoko Kimura.Cast: Miwako Wagatsuma, Yoichiro Saito, Aimi Satsukawa, Shota Sometani.Japan, 2011.Language: Japanese.

Set on a remote beach, this long short is at times a harrowing account of brutality and recrimination. Several traumatised children mete out punishment to their elderly father for unimagined crimes in this meditation on grief, blame and consequences.
There is a stand-out performance from the actor playing the eldest son, Emilio, a thug shaped by tragedy and fear. It is difficult to surmise at times whether the gritty realism here is deliberate, or merely the landscape of an angry teenager's violent fantasies.
As tension between Emilio and his father continues to mount, the rivalry between the brothers is also played out in a series of confrontations. Magdalena, the only girl, retreats into silence as her body betrays her slow passage into womanhood and she is predictably a caring figure who consoles her youngest brother, who refuses to emerge from the wardrobe, where a mysterious silver chalice is kept. This chalice serves a perhaps surprising purpose in the film's conclusion.

A documentary on the Kirov School of Ballet in Russia, narrated by Princess Grace of Monaco.
"Talent is considered worth measuring only when it occurs in the right body," the narrator announces as hundreds of children are paraded across the camera. Each child is aged 10-12 and is gleaned from an application pool of thousands, all hoping to be chosen by the illustrious Vaganova Choreographic Institute and Kirov Ballet.
The audition process as we see it is incredibly is rigorous, with children measured and chosen for the specific physical proportions deemed necessary for the ballet before even having a chance to show off their ability but, as this movie keenly illustrates, the audition is only the first step that they'll take in a lifetime of rigorous discipline if they are accepted.
